WORK EXPERIENCE
J&D Explosives: Laborer (2014-present) Meyersdale, Pennsylvania
Blast Hole Drilling - Work experience in the blast hole drilling sector included identifying hazards and determining a safe work area by considering the specific bench conditions before any work was performed. These considerations included highwall integrity, environmental conditions, bench quality, and utilities. Once the area was inspected and determined safe, the drill rig was allocated on the bench. Pre-start up responsibilities of the drill rig included checking engine, compressor, and hammer oil levels. I added the appropriate fluid and amount if necessary. I also checked the integrity of the tooling which included the drill bit, hammer, and drill pipe. In coordination with the blast plan, blaster, and mine manager, I determined the appropriate bit size, spacing, and burden that met the conditions presented. During the drilling process, I helped mobilize the rig on the bench, and assisted with any maintenance or repairs. It was also necessary for me to develop a drill log that included depths, deviations, hole size, and irregularities of the holes in the drill pattern. Off-site work that I was responsible for included ordering the appropriate parts, replacement tooling, and preforming regular maintenance on the rigs. I also have experience in the rebuilding of hammers, a critical component in DTH drills.
Blast Crew - I held numerous responsibilities and roles when I was on the blast crew. Before our crew was dispatched, I helped load bulk materials, emulsion, and fuel onto delivery trucks. It was my responsibility to ensure we had sufficient product loaded into the trucks. On the jobsite I assisted the blaster-in-charge with backfilling, loading, and stemming blast holes accordingly. I also used the drill log to identify depths, angles, and irregularities for the blaster. I also helped check for water before loading, to achieve optimum initiation and breakage. Following loading, I assisted the blaster with connecting the surface delays, and the lead line for the shot. I also performed seismograph monitoring at nearby residences that measured the vibrations and air blast that the shot may have produced during initiation.
